Dr Gurion Ang (a.k.a. Dr G) is an engagement and teaching focussed academic from UQ’s Faculty of Science. Dr G is passionate about the preservation of the natural world and discovering synergies between nature and technology that will help create a brighter future. His research has focused on insect-plant interactions: understanding the intricate relationships between insect pests and crop plants to improve the way we grow our food.

Originally from Singapore, Dr G moved to Australia to pursue his undergraduate studies in zoology at UQ, and stayed on to complete his PhD with the School of Biological Sciences. In Singapore, he attended school at Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road), and Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

STEM seminars

Each year, Dr G visits various countries to deliver STEM-focussed interactive seminars and laboratory activities in high schools. With guidance from Dr G, school students in Singapore and Malaysia have questioned the possibility of loveable anime characters in the seminar ‘Pokemon: are they biologically possible?’, and discussed the implications of resurrecting giants of the past in the seminar ‘Jurassic World Decoded’. Schools in Hong Kong opened their laboratories to Dr G so their students could learn about forensic science in the workshop, ‘Who Killed Justin Baa-Baa?’.

Dr G aims to inspire students to think like a scientist, no matter what career they pursue. All workshops are curriculum aligned, and can be tailored for a general audiences. Students enjoy how workshops are contextualised in a fun and engaging way where they can apply their learnings, and are encouraged to discuss their ideas to use science to solve global challenges.

He also leads the Faculty of Science in providing professional development to high school teachers in Queensland, Australia, who implement senior science syllabuses. Recently, he has been upskilling teachers in statistical analysis and interpretation.

Invite Dr G to your school

In 2019 Dr G will be visiting Singapore and Malaysia in January, and Hong Kong in July. If your school is interested in hosting a Dr G seminar in 2019, you can submit an expression of interest to your country manager.
