2. Pathways and entry requirements

There are two entry pathways into the Doctor of Medicine (MD):

In March 2018, changes to the selection process for the MD program were approved. The changes to MD Admissions will be progressively introduced between 2019 and 2022, allowing prospective students ample time to prepare.

Provisional entry for school leavers

Provisional entry is only available to students who are completing Year 12 (or equivalent) at the time of their application.

Provisional entry provides a guaranteed pathway to the MD provided you achieve minimum entry requirements and successfully complete your first bachelor's degree at UQ, including required tertiary prerequisite courses.

Minimum entry requirements are:

Provisional entry students must:

  • complete their first bachelor's degree at UQ within the minimum time specified
  • achieve a minimum overall GPA of 5.0 (on a 7-point scale)
  • complete the required tertiary prerequisite courses as part of that degree.

Please note your preferred bachelor's degree may have additional prerequisites, which can be found under the 'Program details' tab of the relevant program page.

For more information about bachelor's programs, please refer to the Faculty of Medicine's Pathways to Medicine page.

Direct entry for graduates

If you have already completed (or are in the process of completing), at minimum, a three-year bachelor's degree (at least six full-time semesters), you can apply for direct entry to the MD. This is known as your key degree.

Your key degree must have been awarded by an accredited Australian university or overseas equivalent, and must have been completed by 31 December in the year of application.

Direct entry applicants need to meet the following minimum application requirements:

  • minimum GPA of 5.0 on a 7-point scale in a key degree (bachelor, honours, masters, graduate diploma or PhD) completed in the past 10 years
  • minimum score of 50 in each section of the GAMSAT completed in the past two years (or a minimum total of 504 for MCAT)
  • at least a score of 7 overall and a minimum of 7 in each sub-band of the IELTS or equivalent.

Based on minimum MCAT or GAMSAT (average) scores and places available, eligible applicants will be invited to participate in a multiple mini interview (MMI).

The main round of interviews will be conducted in mid-July. To be considered for an invitation to interview at this time, your application must be received by 15 June 2019.

Further interviews may be conducted in November, depending on places available in the program.

Following the completion of your MMI, you will be selected for an offer to enrol in the MD program based on the following criteria:

  • number of places available
  • your final ranking based on the combined score of your MMI, GAMSAT/MCAT and GPA.

Your key degree can be in any discipline, although strong scientific knowledge is required for a competitive GAMSAT score. In general, we recommend degrees with a biomedical background.

Applicants applying to commence from 2022 are required to complete required tertiary prerequisite courses prior to starting the MD program.

If you have completed more than one degree (e.g. an approved bachelor's degree plus an approved honours, graduate diploma, masters program, PhD, etc.), the most recent completed degree will be used as your key degree.

If your most recent degree was completed more than 10 years before the proposed MD commencement date, it will not be accepted.

You may 'activate' your degree by completing the equivalent of one full-time semester of approved postgraduate coursework study in the 10 years before the proposed MD commencement date. Alternatively, you may complete a new key degree.

Meeting the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee admission.
