Applying for the Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours)

The Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) is designed to produce newly qualified dentists who can meet competencies set by the Dental Board of Australia.

To apply for the Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours), make sure you meet the program's minimum entry requirements. These are listed under 'Program details' on the Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) program page.

Please note, the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) will replace the UMAT in 2019. If you sat the UMAT in July 2018 for 2019 entry, nothing has changed.

If you are planning on applying for 2020 entry, you will have to sit the UCAT in 2019. All future years will also have to sit the UCAT.

Here's how the application process works for the Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours):

First, QTAC assesses all applications based on subject prerequisites and entry scores, and then ranks each eligible applicant using their UMAT scaled score aggregate (for entry in 2019) or UCAT score (for entry in 2020 or later).

If you're applying for 2020 admission or later, please note that no information has been released yet about how the UCAT is scored.

The required score depends on the performance of applicants in each intake – it can't be determined in advance.

As a guide for entry in 2019, please see UMAT scores for recent Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) intakes:

  Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours)
Year 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018
UMAT 171:57 174:53 173:65 176:55 175:63

In situations where applicants have the same UMAT score, UMAT Section 1 scores are currently used as a tie-breaker.

For entry in 2020 or later, a tie-breaker has not yet been determined.

If a tie-break score was used to determine admission, the UMAT scaled score aggregate and Section 1 score are separated by a colon (:).

For example, in 2017 admission required:

  • a UMAT scaled score aggregate of 176, with
  • a Section 1 score of 55 as the tie-breaker.
  • This is represented by the figure 176:55.
