English language pathways

Body

To succeed at UQ, you will need excellent English language skills.

If you meet all the academic entry requirements for your preferred UQ program, but need further English language training, you can follow one of our two English language pathways through the Institute of Continuing & TESOL Education (ICTE-UQ).

English language pathway students receive a package offer to UQ which includes an offer for a place in an ICTE-UQ English course, plus an offer for a place in a UQ program (conditional on meeting the English language proficiency requirements for entry).

Package offers will be issued when the only outstanding requirement for UQ admission is English and evidence of current English language ability (International English Language Testing System or other recognised test) is provided.

When you apply, we will assess your present skills and place you in the best course for your level.

Pathway options

Bridging English Program (BEP)

The BEP is a 10-week or 20-week, full-time (25 hours tuition per week) English language course.

If you meet all final BEP exit requirements you will gain assured entry to your UQ degree program and will not need to sit an IELTS (or other recognised) test upon completing your course.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) + IELTS

If you’re not eligible for the BEP pathway, you may consider English for Academic Purposes (EAP).

EAP is designed to prepare you for success in academic study, with course materials and assessment reflecting the type of activities and learning environment you will experience at UQ.

The length of the EAP pathway varies depending on your English language ability. You will be tested on your first day at ICTE-UQ and placed in the appropriate class.

If you do not meet the English language entry requirements for EAP you will first be placed in a General English course.

The table below provides an estimate of how long you will need to study English at ICTE-UQ to reach the IELTS score needed to enter your UQ program.
