Hi, my name is Amirah and I studied a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Criminology and Sociology at The University of Queensland.

Why did you choose to study at UQ?

I chose to study at UQ because of its great reputation, not only in Queensland and Australia, but also back in Singapore.

Being ranked in the top 50 universities worldwide and a member of the Group of Eight in Australia intrigued me further to pursue my degree at UQ.

How would you describe your UQ study experience?

I would describe my learning experience at UQ as interesting, enjoyable and beneficial. I’ve learnt a lot here and I definitely don’t regret my decision to pursue my undergraduate studies here.

What motivated you to apply for your program?

My deep interest to delve into the criminal justice system motivated me. I’ve always wanted to be a police officer or a prison officer. By applying for criminology, I hope it enhances my résumé and the likelihood of me being able to pursue my aspiration after graduation.

What are the best things about your program at UQ?

Being able to study aspects of crime and the prison system, in Australia and around the world, intrigued me the most. It broadened my horizons about the causes and consequences of crime and what motivated the offenders.

Furthermore, having a prison trip in one of the courses made the whole experience more interesting and enjoyable. Criminology, in itself, opened my eyes to, and perceptions of, offenders, ex-convicts and the importance of the law.
