UQ people
Published 11 May, 2020  ·  1 minute read

Hi, my name is Diego Montiel and I studied a Master of Architecture at The University of Queensland. I was also a Brisbane International Student Ambassador.

Why did you decide to study in Australia and specifically at UQ?

I chose Australia because I wanted a country where I could improve my English, with good weather and lifestyle, and work opportunities.

Brisbane and UQ gave me the perfect environment to gain academic skills while living on a terrific campus that fulfilled all my necessities.

Was studying in Australia what you expected?

Australia exceeded all expectations. The quality of the education, the world-class facilities and the vibrant student life of Brisbane and UQ mesmerised me from the first day I visited the campus.

Did you undertake an internship, volunteering position, or an international exchange during your time at UQ?

I had the great chance to undertake an internship in the School of Architecture.

I was in charge of implementing a program for a conference series under a topic that really matches my study program and my professional objectives. The topic was 'Infrastructures & Architecture Spain-Australia: The influence of the Spanish developers and Architecture in Australia’s development'.

The main aim of the research was to develop a program for the future implementation of a conference series in the main Australian cities about infrastructures and architecture in Australia related to the Spanish industry. This conference series aims to showcase varied Spanish architectural interventions related to large scale urban infrastructure projects as a possible benchmark for the Australian development.

What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at UQ?

I have achieved a score of 7 in IELTS with only 10 weeks of training, and I have been able to gain enough knowledge and confidence to open my small business.
