Hi, my name is Hayato Nagai, I'm from Japan and I'm doing a PhD in Tourism Management at The University of Queensland. I'm also a UQ International Student Ambassador.

Why did you choose to study in Australia, and specifically at UQ?

I chose UQ to study my master’s degree because UQ offered the degree that I really wanted to study, and had well known academics in my field of study. Also, UQ is one of the best universities in Australia.

Is studying in Australia what you expected and why?

Yes, UQ provided with me great opportunities to develop my academic skills and knowledge. This is why I decided to do my PhD at UQ after completing my master’s degree.

People in Brisbane are very friendly and welcoming. I always appreciate the local community for being so kind and welcoming to international students.

What are the best things about your program at UQ?

I am currently doing my PhD so this is probably very different from coursework degrees, but doing a PhD at UQ is probably the best choice for many international students.

As a research oriented university, students are able to access a broad range of resources and gain support not only from their school but also from the graduate school and student centres.

What advice would you give people from other countries about studying at UQ?

I believe choosing a university is a difficult decision. If possible, I recommend potential students to visit the UQ campus before deciding on a university. I’m very confident that once you enter the UQ campus, you will be able to feel this university’s rich history and great academic and multicultural atmosphere.
