Sim Chuang Ming (Desmond), Singapore

Hi, my name is Desmond and I studied a Bachelor of Science majoring in Chemistry at The University of Queensland.

What is the lifestyle like in Brisbane?
Generally, the lifestyle in Brisbane was great. During my studies I stayed in a share house with an Australian and two other international students.

I made many friends of different nationalities along the way and also enjoyed the various multicultural festivals in Brisbane. The weather also makes for great weekly jogs along the Brisbane River.

Why did you choose your program?
I chose The University of Queensland because it is well recognized for its strong emphasis on research in chemical sciences as well as its excellent facilities. The lecturers were very approachable and supportive in many of my chemistry courses.

During my chemistry honours year, I had the opportunity to partake in a research project with Professor Mary Garson on marine natural products. This allowed me to gain a better understanding of the chemical diversity in the marine environment.
How have you grown personally through your time at UQ?
Studying in Brisbane made me become an independent person as I took up a temporary part time job. I learned that nothing is impossible if one perseveres and is willing to put in the effort.

With the support of my lecturers and friends, I gained valuable skills and knowledge during my studies.
