Hi, my name is Steven and I'm studying a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) at The University of Queensland.

Why did you choose UQ?
The main reason I chose to study in Australia is because I wanted to experience education in a different cultural environment but at the same time still be close to home (as compared to the US or UK).

I initially applied to three universities including UQ, and got accepted by all three of them.

After a period of consideration, I decided to come to UQ as I prefer to live a more subtle and serene lifestyle as a student, further away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

UQ turned out to be the best option because it could provide me with the conducive environment that I was looking for.

How does studying in Australia compare to studying in your home country?
The thing I have personally discovered is the difference in education systems between countries. For instance, in Australia, student engineers are introduced to engineering design and modelling team projects at a very early stage of education – in the first semester of Year 1.

Meanwhile, in Malaysia, friends that are doing engineering are only introduced to design projects in their final year of studies. I believe the knowledge and experience that I have had, and will gain from the remainder of my studies at UQ, will provide me with an edge in the future.

What has been the best part of your studies?
The best thing about the engineering program at UQ is that most of the facilities available on campus are state-of-the-art and very advanced.

I am also extremely proud that UQ is one of the few leading universities to be spearheading some very exciting and ground-breaking research and projects that could revolutionize the future.
