English language pathways

You will need excellent English language skills to succeed at UQ.

If you need further English language training, we encourage you to undertake an English language pathway at the Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education (ICTE-UQ).

English-language pathway students will receive a package offer to UQ which includes:

  • an offer to study an ICTE-UQ English course, plus
  • a conditional offer for a UQ program (conditional on meeting English language proficiency requirements for entry).

Package offers for coursework programs will be issued when the only outstanding requirement for admission is English.

You will still have to provide evidence of your current English language ability (e.g. IELTS or another recognised test).

When you apply, we will assess your skills and place you in the best English course for your level.

English language requirements are listed on each program page.

Pathway options

Bridging English Program (BEP)

The BEP is a full-time English-language course that runs from 10 weeks to 30 weeks, depending on your level of ability.

If you meet all BEP exit requirements you will gain entry to your UQ program and you will not need to sit an IELTS (or another recognised test).

English for Academic Purposes + IELTS

If you’re not eligible for the Bridging English Pathway, you may like to consider English for Academic Purposes (EAP).

EAP is designed to prepare you for university-level study, with course materials and assessment reflecting the activities and learning environment you will experience at UQ.

The length of the EAP pathway varies depending on your English language ability. You will be tested on your first day at ICTE-UQ and placed in an appropriate class.

If you do not meet the English language entry requirements for EAP you will be placed in a General English course.

The table below provides an estimate of how long you will need to study English at ICTE-UQ to reach the IELTS score needed to enter your UQ program:
