Genia Hill studied the Master of Environmental Management at The University of Queensland and is now forging a meaningful career as an executive officer at The Carbon Hub, a not-for-profit research entity aimed at developing better climate change mitigation outcomes.
Genia was inspired to study at UQ after hearing about the first-rate facilities, dedicated and passionate teachers, highly regarded environmental science programs, and lifestyle benefits available to students at the university.
“The Master of Environmental Management is a really high-calibre program, meaning you get to study at a world-class university in a program that’s ranked #1 in the country, which is something I was really excited about,” she says.
“There were so many opportunities to meet people through career nights, research opportunities, and lectures across the beautiful St Lucia campus, and I was able to build connections and networks that I think will last for a long time.”
Why study the Master of Environmental Management at UQ?
Another benefit of the Master of Environmental Management program is the opportunities it provides to work on practical projects out in the field, where you’ll develop and utilise the skills and knowledge you gather in the classroom, in a real-life setting.
“I think going into the field is one of the most fun parts of the program and also something where you learn a lot because it’s a really hands-on experience,” says Genia.
“You’re not just thinking theoretically; you’re actually doing a lot of practical work and learning what fieldwork is like for a future career – it’s great preparation for what’s to come in your career.”
Genia’s career so far
The interdisciplinary nature of the Master of Environmental Management program gave Genia the confidence to kickstart her career. It began with an environmental internship with the United Nations in Kenya, and now she works alongside environmental experts at The Carbon Hub to provide solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues.
“This interdisciplinarity of the program means that you get to work in areas that you are interested in, but also other areas that you might not have thought about,” says Genia.
“There are elements of agriculture that I was really interested in, and there are also elements of the science of problem solving that really grabbed me – with this degree, you can shape it into what you’re interested in, meaning you’re able to forge a diverse and exciting career after you graduate.”
If you’re interested in a career where you’ll help solve some of today’s most vital and challenging global issues, UQ’s Master of Environmental Management could be the perfect place to start your journey.
