Hi, my name is Kaustubh Pant, I'm from India and I'm doing a Bachelor of Engineering with a dual major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Queensland. I'm also a UQ International Student Ambassador.
Why did you choose to study in Australia and specifically at UQ?
I knew that I wanted to study my Bachelor’s degree at a reputable university to further my education.
The more I read about Australia and the opportunities a person can get there the more I realised I really wanted to study here. It was also really important to me that the climate and weather was similar to my home country and Brisbane matched all the conditions.
There aren’t many universities in the world that provide a dual major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. While I was in the process of deciding where to do my further education, as soon as I saw that UQ provides a dual major in Electrical and Computer Science, that was when I decided to join UQ. This degree is really very challenging and I'm really happy with my decision to join UQ and study this program.
What are your thoughts on studying in Australia and Brisbane?
I was actually under 18 when I came to study in Brisbane and had never stayed away from my parents before. It was a huge challenge but it really only took me a few weeks to settle down and get comfortable here. I live in student accommodation which actually helps a lot when making friends. We have social events everyday through which I’ve made a lot of friends.
Ultimately, Brisbane is a peaceful city, which makes it a great place to study. I live in South Bank which is one of the most happening places in Brisbane. You can walk to the city and a lot of festivals and events happen in my suburb. I personally feel that this is the best place for a student to live in Brisbane. If I need a break from my daily routine, I can always go to the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast to relax and get away from all the work and stress.
What are the best things about your program at UQ?
I’ve always been interested in working in the area of computer science and working with electrical circuits has always been my thing. I thought that this degree would best help me to achieve my dream goals. I really value that it allows for me to study both electrical engineering and computer engineering and enjoy that the program keeps me on my toes.
I also have a passion for aerospace and plan to pursue this field in the future, so the fact that I can take aerospace engineering electives is also really beneficial.
What advice would you give people from other countries about studying at UQ?
The most important thing that will always help you to settle down in a new place is to make friends. Interacting with people who live in that city always helps you to adjust. Also, always try to attend all of the lectures, tutorials and practicals and don't miss any sessions.
