Dual degrees

Get 2 qualifications in less time and increase your career options.

Double your options

With 2 degrees, you'll have more opportunities.

By combining your interests in different fields, you can carve out a niche or create flexibility in your career.

The best part? Your workload won't increase. You'll take the same number of courses each semester in a dual program (sometimes called a double degree) as you would for a single degree.

Why choose a dual degree?

Enhance your employability

Dual degrees are highly regarded by employers and can give you the competitive edge in the job market.

Save time and money

Our dual degrees are designed to take 4 years full-time (5.5 for Engineering, 5 for Law), compared to 6 or 8 years for 2 single degrees. That’s a massive saving on fees.

Adapt in a changing world

With expertise in different disciplines, you'll have the flexibility and skills to flourish in emerging markets and non-linear careers.

How duals work

Tailoring your studies to suit you

You can select from more than 70 duals at UQ. You could combine arts with science to broaden your skills, or nursing with midwifery to focus your career.

You can also use majors and minors to build a unique portfolio that reflects your interests and career goals.

Meeting the entry requirements

Go to the program page for the dual to check the entry requirements. In most cases this will be the same as meeting the requirements for both single degrees, but it differs for some duals.

Planning your studies

We'll provide you with a study planner to help you meet the requirements for the program. You'll complete the core components for each degree but have fewer (or no) electives. In this way, you'll complete 2 degrees in less time and with fewer courses overall.

If you'd like to go on an overseas exchange as part of your studies, seek advice early to find out how to fit this in your study plan.

Any subject prerequisites will be listed on the dual program page. To find the minimum entry score, you’ll usually need to check the scores for each of the individual programs. You must meet the higher score.

Upgrade your degree

Thinking of switching to a dual program?

Perhaps you didn't get the entry score for your first preferred degree or haven't decided which path to take.

You could start in a single degree with a lower entry score, then use your university studies to meet the requirements, and transition to a dual degree that suits your interests.

You can also use electives to explore other fields and find out what it's really like to study a second degree. If you choose to switch to a dual, the electives you've completed may count as credit towards the second degree.
