  • This three-year program will equip you with a deep knowledge of calculus, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, modelling and complex analysis as well as the quantitative and analytical skills to apply mathematics across a variety of fields and industries.
  • Become a specialist by choosing a major in Applied Mathematics, Data Analytics and Operations Research, Mathematical Physics, Pure Mathematics or Statistics. Choose a minor in Bioinformatics, Computer Science or Physics.
  • Choose from more than 60 individual mathematics and statistics courses. UQ offers more practical and theoretical mathematics courses than any other Queensland university, including the option to specialise in Pure Mathematics.

International students who are accepted into full-time study in the Bachelor of Mathematics are eligible to apply for an Australian student visa.

Courses

The courses offered in the Bachelor of Mathematics are set out in the course list. Each course is allocated a certain number of units (#). A standard full-time study load is 8 units per semester.

Applied Mathematics

The Applied Mathematics major focuses on the derivation and evaluation of models in the physical, biological and engineering sciences. As a student in the Applied Mathematics major, you'll study advanced techniques for solving differential equations using high-level maths in the second and third years of your major. Courses also examine the numerical methods used in computer programming and computational science, and you can also choose from electives that focus on areas like financial mathematics.

Data Analytics and Operations Research

Data analytics and operations research are both rapidly growing disciplines that use a range of mathematical, statistical and computational approaches to big data. As a student in the Data Analytics and Operations Research major, you'll learn how to extract information and make decisions in fields from pure science research to applied business management. You'll also learn the skills to analyse large and complex data sets and to make effective decisions using optimisation techniques.

Mathematical Physics

The field of Mathematical Physics focuses on the mathematical foundations of modern physical theories. It also provides the mathematical understanding that underpins a broad range of contemporary sciences, including statistical mechanics, relativity and quantum theory. As a student in the Mathematical Physics major, you'll learn how to understand and describe nature at its most fundamental levels. This major not only prepares students for research in mathematical physics and related disciplines – it also fosters creativity and develops high-level skills in critical and analytical thinking, which are paramount in problem solving.

Pure Mathematics

As a student in the Pure Mathematics major, you'll study the intrinsic nature and fundamental properties of mathematics, and recognise its ubiquity, universality and beauty. Courses in the major develop high-level skills in critical, analytical and abstract thinking, and provide frameworks for deeper understanding of other areas of mathematics, such as applied mathematics, mathematical physics and statistics. The major offers the opportunity to acquire a solid grounding in the key areas of pure mathematics, as well opportunities to undertake focused study in advanced courses. Our pure mathematics courses cover areas such as algebra, analysis, combinatorics, geometry, number theory and topology.

Statistics

Statistics is a field that seeks to understand and deal with chance and uncertainty through mathematics. As a student in the Statistics major, you'll learn about the design, collection, analysis and interpretation of data, and how to extract patterns and identify other useful relationships. Courses also focus on key features of statistics, including the development and use of probability models to represent random phenomena, which you'll use to analyse and make predictions and decisions.

The "indicative annual fee" is the cost of enrolling in the Bachelor of Mathematics for the 2020 academic year. It is calculated based on a standard full-time study load.

A standard full-time study load is 16 units per academic year.

If you enrol in a larger or smaller study load, your fees will be calculated on a proportionate basis.
