  • Benefit from a flexible program. You can choose to complete two fields of study; or one field of study and a range of electives; or one field of study and a research stream. Electives cover topics like economics, information systems, and entrepreneurship.
  • Enrol in an optional research stream and study qualitative and quantitative research methods, and complete a project on a topic of your choice. You'll open doors to careers in research or consulting, within industry or academia.

Admissions criteria

Prerequisites

Bachelor degree or equivalent in the same discipline as approved by the Executive Dean with a GPA of at least 4.5 on a 7 point scale.
Field of Study: For students who have previously undertaken studies in business or commerce, entry will only be considered for a field not already studied (with the exception of the Supply Chain Management field of study).

English Proficiency

IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6. For other English Language Proficiency Tests and Scores approved for UQ, view the English proficiency policy.

Visa requirements

International students who are accepted into full-time study in the Master of Business are eligible to apply for an Australian student visa.

The Australian Government has simplified the visa application process. Now, all international students apply for the Student Visa (subclass 500).

Advertising

Demand for business and marketing professionals with expertise in advertising is rapidly expanding. This demand is especially strong in emerging economies as they transition to economies driven by domestic consumer demand. The advertising industry itself has changed greatly over the past two decades with changes in industry structure, media channels, technology, and consumer empowerment. Media rather than creative companies dominate the advertising industry today. These companies require professionals with knowledge of, and skills in, strategic media buying and planning, marketing and advertising, program evaluation, and in emerging areas of specialisation such as social media management. The advertising specialisation is for marketing professionals to acquire the strategic perspective needed to be successful in this global industry.

Human Resource Management

A cohesive team is any organisation's main asset. As a student the Human Resource Management (HRM) field of study, you'll learn how to manage people to create positive outcomes for organisations and positive work experiences for people. Courses cover content knowledge in areas like the recruitment and selection of employees, performance management, compensation, training and development, career support, team development, communication and conflict, industrial negotiation and resolution, and strategy. Courses also develop important interpersonal and professional skills.

Information Systems

Marketing is a continually evolving area that is creative, rewarding and innovative. This field of study provides students with the knowledge and skills required to be effective marketers and pursue careers in a range of organisations and sectors.

Graduates of the Marketing major typically work as managers and consultants in marketing and advertising agencies; in the marketing departments of various private, public or not-for-profit organisations; or market research organisations.

Supply Chain Management

The field of Supply Chain Management is designed for business managers who want to obtain education and training in how to organise and control the flow of material and information within and between organisations. It covers supply chain design, logistics management, distribution channels, and supply chain operations and quality management. In today’s increasingly turbulent commercial world, achieving an efficient and effective supply network is central to business success. The world we live in depends on logistics and supply chain managers to make products available to us. These managers are the ultimate back-room power players moving millions of dollars of product every day. Supply chain management is critical to the success of any company that manufactures or handles goods. It monitors the movement and storage of raw materials, maintains inventories of all stock and work that is in progress, and tracks goods from their point of origin to the final customer. It's also about working closely with a variety of external partners to find and source the best materials at the best price and maintaining strong links with suppliers and customers.

International students can commence studying the Supply Management field in Semester 1 only. 

Career outcomes

Graduates of the Supply Chain Management major typically work as supply chain managers, logistics managers, operations managers, purchasing specialists, product managers or supply chain analysts. They work in industries such as manufacturing; food and beverage; bio-tech and pharmaceuticals; automotive and aerospace; retail; transportation and logistics; internet and software; chemicals, oil and gas; and consulting. These roles support the national and/or international operations of a spectrum of organisations from SMEs through to Fortune-500 companies.

A standard full-time study load is 16 units per academic year.
