Why study the Master of Business

The Master of Business is designed for people aspiring to management roles, for current managers seeking formal qualifications and for those changing career direction. This program will help you to further develop your business skills, build specialist knowledge within your chosen area and accelerate your career.

The Master of Business program offers two different entry points depending on your previous studies. The Master (1.5 years) is designed for those graduates with a Bachelor's degree in the same discipline. The Master (2 years) includes the core fundamentals of general management for those graduates with a Bachelor's degree from any discipline. Both Masters provide an opportunity to specialise in two fields of study or additional research electives (which may provide a pathway to research higher degree programs). Each specialised field of study will equip you with the relevant knowledge to jumpstart or advance your chosen profession.

You can choose to specialise in the areas of advertising, human resource management, information systems, innovation and entrepreneurship, international business, leadership, marketing, social impact and sustainability, or supply chain management.

Admissions criteria


Bachelor degree or equivalent in any discipline with a GPA of at least 4.5 on a 7 point scale; OR Graduate Certificate in Business from UQ or equivalent with a GPA of at least 4.5 on a 7 point scale.
Field of Study: For students who have previously undertaken studies in business or commerce, entry will only be considered for a field not already studied (with the exception of the Supply Chain Management field of study).

Demand for business and marketing professionals with expertise in advertising is rapidly expanding. This demand is especially strong in emerging economies as they transition to economies driven by domestic consumer demand. The advertising industry itself has changed greatly over the past two decades with changes in industry structure, media channels, technology, and consumer empowerment. Media rather than creative companies dominate the advertising industry today. These companies require professionals with knowledge of, and skills in, strategic media buying and planning, marketing and advertising program evaluation, and in emerging areas of specialisation such as social media management. The advertising specialisation is for marketing professionals to acquire the strategic perspective needed to be successful in this global industry.

Human Resource Management

Human resource management (HRM) is concerned with managing people within an organisation to create value for the organisation and positive work experiences for individuals. The range of functions covered include recruitment and selection of employees, performance management, compensation, training and development, career support, team development, communication and conflict, industrial negotiation, and resolution and HR strategy. Courses cover content knowledge in these areas and also skills and personal capabilities necessary for HRM graduates to be effective practitioners within organisations.

Information Systems

The field of Information Systems is designed for business managers who wish to obtain education and training in the analysis, design, use and management of Information Systems in a business environment. The program facilitates the development of advanced Information Systems skills that enable students to conduct data analytics and process improvement activities, as well as to advise on organisational information requirements and related strategy. Through completing the program, students are able to integrate their existing understanding of, and experience in, business, with skills in eliciting organisational requirements, skills in generating insights from data, and skills in designing and managing systems involving business data. Such skills are crucial in modern organisations, which are underpinned by Information Systems and depend on them to support efficient and effective decision making.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The specialisation in innovation and entrepreneurship provides students with the knowledge and skills to be entrepreneurial and innovative in a variety of commercial and social settings. We take a developmental approach from idea to start-up to value capture. Relying heavily on problem-based learning, students will learn from leading academic and industry experts in a highly-applied program, well supported by theory. Our hands-on electives offer students access to an array of incubators, venture capitalists, consultants and successful entrepreneurs to learn beyond the classroom.

International Business

Skills in international business management are essential for the new generation of managers in today's global marketplace. Modern managers must understand the problems and opportunities that cross-border activities create, drawing upon the full suite of disciplines that inform the strategies, structures and processes within firms and other organisations, their locations and the motivations and behaviours of people working for them. The international business major provides the skills to improve the performance of internationally active firms and other organisations and to enhance the well-being of people affected by their cross-border activities.


This specialisation is intended for those seeking to undertake a leadership role in the workplace or enhance their current practices. It focuses on values-based, transformative models of leadership that produce positive outcomes for the organisation and society. Incorporating gender and cultural issues contributes to more democratic and diverse leadership possibilities in the future. Drawing on western and non-western wisdom theory, students will develop an understanding of the timeless principles of leadership. Leadership theories will be supplemented by individual self-assessments, practical tasks, and reflection that cultivate the practical aptitudes needed to lead contemporary organisations from middle management to CEO.


Marketing knowledge and skills are in high demand as the world transforms into a global marketplace for internationally traded goods, services, and ideas. Marketing is concerned with identifying consumer needs and wants and targeting organisational resources towards profitably satisfying these needs and wants.

Effective marketing requires knowledge of product and brand management, consumer behaviour and research, product and service development, and marketing strategy making. The marketing major provides students with the knowledge and skills required to be effective marketers and pursue careers as marketing professionals.

Organisational Sustainability

Sustainable business management is crucially important for success in a future characterised by physical (natural), market, economic, legal and social uncertainty. Transformation will be necessary to meet the risks, realise the opportunities and accelerate the path to a sustainable future defined by earth's and society's safe operating space. New models of business and a greater understanding of system-wide impacts will be necessary for businesses to thrive in a climate changing, resource-constrained, and interconnected environment. Whether your interest is in commercial business or social enterprise a comprehensive knowledge of sustainable business concepts is a critical requirement for leaders seeking to develop adaptive and resilient companies.

Supply Chain Management

Supply Chain Management is designed for business managers who wish to obtain education and training in how to organise and control the flow of material within and between organisations, covering supply chain design, logistics management, distribution channels, and quality management. In today's increasingly turbulent commercial world, achieving an efficient supply network is central to business success. The world depends on supply chain managers to make products available to us.

Supply chain management is critical to the success of any company which manufactures or handles goods. It monitors the movement and storage of raw materials, maintains inventories of all stock and work that is in progress, and tracks goods from their point of origin to the final customer. It's also about working closely with a variety of external partners to find and source the best materials at the best price and maintaining strong links with suppliers and customers.

A standard full-time study load is 16 units per academic year.
