Admissions criteria

Prerequisites

an approved Bachelor Degree in a relevant area of study with a GPA of at least 5.0 on a 7 point scale; or
an approved Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in a relevant area of study with a GPA of at least 5.0 on a 7 point scale.

A relevant area of study for a field in:
- Cyber Defence is a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Mathematics.
- Cyber Criminology is a degree in Sociology, Criminology, Criminal Justice or Crime Science.
- Cryptography is a degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Actuarial Science or Information Technology.
- Leadership is a degree in Commerce, Management, Business, Accounting, Information Technology, Computer Science, Leadership. In addition applicants must minimum of 5 years of supervisory/management experience. This may include, but is not limited to: managing a team of people, managing client accounts, the managerial components of any major projects, resource planning, direct responsibility for financial delegations.

TOEFL IBT - Overall 87, listening 19, reading 19, writing 21 and speaking 19.

BEP - A minimum overall grade of 4 plus a minimum grade of C in all macro skills.

Visa requirements

International students who are accepted into full-time study in the Master of Cyber Security are eligible to apply for an Australian student visa.

Cryptography

This field will empower you to play a lead role in the technical heart of cyber security - the security of data at rest and in transit, through modern and emerging cryptographic techniques. If you're keen to work in cutting-edge areas such as quantum algorithms and quantum computing, team up with world-leading agencies to tackle big cyber security challenges, or pursue security roles in the public and private sectors - this field will give you skills and confidence to make it happen.

Cyber Criminology

What motivates cyber criminals? The more we interrogate this question, the better we can manage and get ahead of cyber threats. In this field you'll look at the psychological, sociological and criminological considerations that impact upon the human component of cyber security, and learn how to overcome the threats they pose to systems, individuals, information and organisational integrity. Whether you're looking to upskill or re-stream into the cyber industry, you'll gain the skills and knowledge to make your mark in intelligence, law enforcement or security in either management, investigative or threat analysis roles.

Cyber Defence

In this field, you'll learn what it takes to protect systems, data, organisations and people against a variety of cyber-attacks. You'll delve into the fundamentals of cyber security, as well as advanced topics, including vulnerability assessment and penetration testing, internet of things security, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. Alongside the theory, you'll get real experience through coursework, research or industry-led project placements, or at the UQ Cyber Security Centre. Our team have research connections all around the world, and with such high demand from industry, they can set you up with opportunities to collaborate with leading minds.

Leadership

In an industry like cyber security, rapid change is inevitable. And as we continue to find new ways to defend, adapt to and get ahead of threats, we need a new generation of leaders to develop and evolve resilient organisations. We take an inter-disciplinary approach, bringing together students from all kinds of backgrounds to meet the ever-complex challenges within the field. You'll develop a deep understanding of cyber security governance, risk management and how to apply effective leadership skills to engage with technical teams and lead organisations in designing and implementing safer digital environments.

The "indicative annual fee" is the cost of enrolling in the Master of Cyber Security for the 2020 academic year. It is calculated based on a standard full-time study load.

A standard full-time study load is 16 units per academic year.

If you enrol in a larger or smaller study load, your fees will be calculated on a proportionate basis.
