Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest areas of engineering.

Mechanical engineers design and manufacture machinery and equipment for a wide range of uses, design and operate power plants, and calculate the economical combustion of fuels, the conversion of heat energy into mechanical power and how mechanical power is used.

In this major you'll study foundational courses in design, mathematics, modelling, computing, management and engineering science. Electives in later years will give you an opportunity to specialise in fields of your choosing. The principal topics in mechanical engineering are fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer, solid mechanics, manufacturing, energy systems, and dynamics and control.

Career paths can lead to roles in the automotive, aerospace, environmental, medical, power generation and building industries as well as in research, design and development, testing and manufacturing, program management, specialist consulting engineering firms, government agencies and educational institutions.

Graduate job-ready

  • You will learn how to design, manufacture and control machines and engines ranging from power generators through to manufacturing systems. You’ll also have access to innovative technologies and our specialist workshop areas (including our race car workshop) where you can practice your new skills.
  • Our graduates have the practical and advanced theoretical knowledge needed to step into roles that lead machinery development across the globe.
