Master of Advanced Economics

Overview

Benefit from world class, high-level training in formal techniques of economic analysis and econometrics to fast track your career.

Consider your internationally recognised master's qualification in economics an investment in long-term career success.

Over 16 units you'll study courses influenced by the latest economic research, and be taught by world-class academic staff who will ensure you receive a quality education in advanced economics.

This 2-semester program consists entirely of technically challenging coursework. Courses cover advanced econometric theory, quantitative skills for economics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, computational methods and advanced microeconometrics.

This program is often taken as a pathway to PhD studies at UQ. It's also suitable as a standalone credential for those who want to fast-track their careers as economists in sectors that do not require a doctorate.

  • A postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline.
 You must have a grade point average (GPA) of 6.0 on a 7-point scale in your previous qualification. The School of Economics requires the following documentation for all applications:
  • Official transcripts of previous studies
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Cover letter - in addition to a brief statement explaining your motivation for applying, please provide details of the textbooks you have used in your highest-level micro, macro and econometrics courses, and a list of the highest-level types of mathematics that you have studied. Your cover letter can be uploaded to the application portal.
  • Evidence of English language proficiency
  • Two references - a blank reference report can be requested by emailing economics@uq.edu.au. References should be completed by your referees and emailed directly to economics@uq.edu.au

Student visas

International students who are accepted into full-time study in the Master of Advanced Economics are eligible to apply for an Australian student visa (subclass 500).

There are a number of requirements you must satisfy before a visa is granted, including the genuine temporary entrant (GTE) requirement.

Indicative annual fee 2021

This indicative annual fee is the cost of enrolling in the Master of Advanced Economics for the 2021 academic year. It is calculated based on a standard full-time study load (16 units per academic year).

If you enrol in a larger or smaller study load, your fees will be calculated on a proportionate basis. All fees are reviewed annually.
