To apply for the Doctor of Medicine, you need to know which entry pathway you're eligible for.
At UQ, the Doctor of Medicine (MD) is a 4-year postgraduate program.
There are 2 entry pathways into our MD program:
- Provisional Entry (for school leavers)
- Direct Entry (for university graduates).
In Semester 2, 2021, we'll be teaching on campus, with online options for students who can't attend in person. Course delivery modes may change in future semesters.
Provisional Entry (for school leavers)
If you're in your final year of high school (Queensland Year 12 or equivalent), you can apply for the Provisional Entry pathway.
This pathway guarantees entry into the MD if you:
- achieve minimum entry requirements, and
- successfully complete your first bachelor's degree at UQ.
Direct Entry (for university graduates)
If you've completed, or are in your final year of, a minimum of a 3-year bachelor's degree (6 semesters full-time), you can apply for the Direct Entry pathway.
This pathway provides direct entry into the MD.
Available places
Approximately 280 places are available for domestic students each year.
Half of these places are filled by students from the Provisional Entry pathway, and half by students from the Direct Entry pathway.
All places offered to domestic students are Commonwealth Supported. However, places are offered in 3 different categories:
- Bonded Medical Program – 28.5 per cent of places.
- Commonwealth Supported Places (non-bonded medical places) – 71.5 per cent of places.
- Rural Background Scheme – 28 per cent of places are set aside for the Rural Background Scheme. These are filled from both BMP and non-bonded places.
