Why did you choose to study in Australia? And why UQ?

Looking for options to study abroad, I came up with the Australian Government scholarship program for Latin America, ‘Australian Awards’.

I decided to apply. I never thought of coming to Australia before. In fact, Europe was my first option, but the more I read about Australia, the more I got convinced it was the right place to go. I read about its prestigious universities, relaxed lifestyle, diverse and breathtaking landscapes, beaches and more.

It was hard to choose, but I decided to study at UQ for two main reasons. First, because it offered the program I was looking for (economics combined with public policy analysis).

And second, because of its location. Brisbane is such a nice, safe, liveable city, and it has so much to offer. I don’t regret my decision at all.

While enrolled at UQ, have you undertaken an internship, volunteering position or industry placement?

Last year got involved in ‘Oaktree’, an organization that aims to end poverty, by participating in its ‘End Poverty Road trip’ to raise awareness and collect signatures for a petition about Tax Justice and Australian Foreign Aid. It was an incredible experience! I met so many energetic, passionate and dedicated young people from Queensland and all over Australia. We even got the opportunity to hold meetings with Australian politicians at the Parliament House in Canberra in order to seek their support for our campaign.

After the road trip, we organized documentary screenings all over Australia for the ‘International Day for Eradication of Poverty’, and this year, we have many exciting campaigns and activities planned as well.

What have you discovered, either personally or academically through your studies at UQ?

The amount of resources available to us is overwhelming. We have different libraries and labs, Student Services, UQ Careers and Employability office, Student Union, and so on. The University provides so much support for international students that makes our transition and adaptation so much easier.
