Meet Garmen from China, studying International Hotel and Tourism Management in Australia

UQ people
Published 11 May, 2020  ·  2 minute read

Hi, my name is Garmen Chen. I'm from China and I'm currently studying a Bachelor of International Hotel and Tourism Management at The University of Queensland. I'm also a UQ International Ambassador.

Why did you decide to study in Australia and specifically at UQ?

Australia is a good place to study in considering its wonderful climate and scenery, friendly people, lovely living environment, and endless opportunities. UQ, as a top 100 university in the world, is famous for its outstanding education quality and various student activities.

What do you like most about living in Australia?

I would say it's the friendly people here who are always willing to make friends with you. People say hi to you around the street, help out when you need it, and respect all kinds of cultures and backgrounds. It's the people here that have made it easier to adapt to a new living environment.

What are the best things about your program at UQ?

I’m in currently in a 2+2 program with UQ and Sun Yat-sen University in China under the Bachelor of International Hotel and Tourism Management, majoring in Event Management.

The good thing about UQ is that you have elective courses you can choose from other programs that interest you. I’m taking marketing and other business courses in my electives, which equip me with more knowledge and skill for the industry I’m interested in.

While enrolled at UQ, have you undertaken an internship or industry placement?

I had my internship experience at UQ International as an event management intern, where I assisted with the organisation and coordination of university marketing events. This included the Lord Mayor's International Student Friendship Ceremony, UQ Information Days (in 5 Asian cities) and 'UQ for a Day'. This was a great experience that allowed me to put my knowledge into practice and also learn more about the workplace in Australia.

I’m also currently doing a marketing project for an Australian start-up and its app product: Smooth Operator. My marketing course offered me this great opportunity. I also have experience as a volunteer in various events like Brisbane Festival, Bridge to Brisbane, EKKA, Stampede Brisbane, and more. This is a good way to make friends and learn more about this city and this country.
