Hi, my name is Garmen Chen, I'm from China and I'm currently studying a Bachelor of International Hotel and Tourism Management and The University of Queensland. I'm also a UQ International Ambassador.

Why did you decide to study in Australia and specifically at UQ?

Australia is a good place to study in, considering its wonderful climate and scenery, friendly people, lovely living environment, and endless opportunities. UQ, as the top 100 university in the world, is famous for its outstanding education quality and various student activities.

What do you like most about living in Australia?

I would say it is the friendly people here who are always willing to make friends with you. People say hi to you around the street, give hands to you when you need, and respect all kinds of cultures and backgrounds. It is the people here that have make it easier to get adapted to a new living environment.

What are the best things about your program at UQ?

I’m in currently in a 2+2 program cooperated with UQ and Sun Yat-sen University in China under Bachelor of International Hotel & Tourism Management with Event Management Major. The good thing about UQ is that you have elective courses you can choose from other programs that interest you. I’m take marketing and other business courses in my electives, which equip me with more knowledge and skills for the industry I’m interested in.

While enrolled at UQ, have you undertaking an internship or industry placement?

I had my internship experience at UQ International as an event management intern, where I assisted with the organization and coordination of university marketing events, including the Lord Mayor's International Student Friendship Ceremony, UQ Information Days (in five Asian cities) and UQ for a Day. This is a great experience that allowed me to put into practice my knowledge and also know more about the work place in Australia. I’m also currently doing a marketing project for an Australian start-up and its app product: Smooth Operator. My marketing coursed offered me this great opportunity. I also have experience as volunteer in various events like Brisbane Festival, Bridge to Brisbane, EKKA, Stampede Brisbane, etc. This is a good way to make friends and know more about this city and this country.
