Project description

Magnesium is one of the seven macrominerals essential for adequate growth, productivity and health in farmed animals. Further, magnesium oxide (MgO) has been shown to possess antimicrobial properties and may have a positive impact on the microbiome.

Working with industry partner Calix Global, this project will explore the antimicrobial properties of MgO by developing different formulations and delivery systems for a specific animal model. Its effects on gut health will also be evaluated. The optimised formulations will be tested in-vivo and scaled up to validate its commercial potential.

Research environment

This project is part of the ARC Training Centre for Environmental and Agricultural Solutions to Antimicrobial Resistance (CEAStAR), a collaboration between UQ, University of Adelaide and industry partners to develop innovative solutions to reduce the adverse impacts of antimicrobial resistance. Research is funded through the Australian Research Council's Industrial Transformation Research Program.

The successful applicant will be primarily based at PACE in Woolloongabba. The successful applicant will work closely with the industry partner, including completing a 12-month equivalent industry placement. They will also have access to world-class research facilities, funding opportunities for national and international conferences, and specialised training and development.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity of manage and lead an industry-driven research project with real-world applications.

Scholarship

This project is supported by the Research project scholarship.

This scholarship includes:

  • living stipend of $38,982 per annum, indexed annually
  • tuition fees covered.

A working knowledge of formulation development, and microbiology would be of benefit to someone working on this project.

You will demonstrate academic achievement in the field/s of pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, formulation chemistry, microbiology, biological sciences and the potential for scholastic success.

A background or knowledge of biomedical engineering, and veterinary formulation is highly desirable.
