Retirement savings and public sector debt continue to grow, as technologies and geo-political risks increase. To cope, the financial sector must recognise and embed best practices relating to managing financial objectives and risks across volatile markets, changing demographics, new technologies and responsible investing and lending.
The Master of Finance and Investment Management is designed for graduates looking to advance their careers in the finance sector. Through the duration of this specialist master’s degree, you’ll gain exposure to innovative investment strategies involving both traditional and alternative asset classes. Obtain a deep understanding of financial modelling, portfolio management, derivatives, fixed income, public sector financing, equities, venture capital, real estate and infrastructure while becoming acquainted with recent technological advancements shaping the financial industry. Entry requirements
Entry requirements
To be eligible for entry, you'll need:
- a bachelor honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (see below), or
- a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (see below), plus 2 years full-time equivalent relevant work experience (see below), or
- the Graduate Certificate in Finance and Investment Management from UQ (or equivalent), or
- the Graduate Certificate in Commerce from UQ (or equivalent).
You must have a grade point average (GPA) of 4.5 on a 7-point scale in your previous qualification.
International applicants must have completed the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) with a minimum score of 550.

Relevant disciplines for previous qualifications
Relevant disciplines include:
- a bachelor or bachelor honours degree in accounting, commerce, economics, finance, mathematics or quantitative methods; or
- a bachelor or bachelor honours degree containing at least 5 courses in the following areas:
- calculus or advanced mathematics or high mathematics or mathematical analysis.
- finance or financial management
- accounting or accounting management
- business analytics or business information systems
- algebra
- probability or statistics
- statics
- ordinary differential equation or numerical analysis or differential equations or multivariate analysis
Relevant work experience
Relevant work experience should typically be post-graduation and includes work in finance, funds management, debt/liquidity management, broking, bank/corporate treasury, trading, business partner (accounting, economics or finance), origination, and investment banking in various types of roles (front office, middle office and relevant support functions e.g. legal), or project management roles (with financial, venture capital or quantitative responsibilities).

Student visas
International students who are accepted into full-time study in the Master of Finance and Investment Management are eligible to apply for an Australian student visa (subclass 500).
There are a number of requirements you must satisfy before a visa is granted, including the Genuine Student (GS) requirement.

Exemptions may apply for applicants who have completed a bachelor or master's degree program at an accredited university or institution which is recognised by The University of Queensland as one where:
- English was the medium of instruction, and

- the final year of study was undertaken during the five (5) years immediately prior to the commencement of study at The University of Queensland.
